She had been showing Nomi around the submarine; no more than a quick tour of Team Rocket’s vast underwater headquarters. The main foyer, the dorms and dining hall in the west wing, the training facilities in the east wing (not very important, in her opinion), and then, finally, the north wing.

”Where the big bosses are.” She had told Nomi then, but past the courtyard there was also something else, a simple sign that read: LABORATORIES.

Sure enough, there were more than a few rooms, state-of-the-art equipment being used by stoic-looking men and women in lab coats that seemed much more preoccupied with their work than with paying Ceri and Nomi any mind at all. She greeted a few of them, cheerful as ever and acting as if they were people she knew well (since, truly, they were exactly that). For, within these steel walls down in the ocean’s depths, some of the greatest minds of the Hoenn region came together, and apparently, they could count themselves amongst them.

”I’m supposed to collect some samples for MAGMA, but I asked one of the bosses and he said you can help me out to start off with. It’s pretty cool stuff, I’ve been super busy looking into the Pokérus-Y virus and shadow genes and all that.” Ceri then gives Nomi a smile, approaching her usual working area. Reaching into her pocket, she brings out a pokéball, from it releasing a sleepy-looking Stufful that sits on the table. ”Here’s the list of samples we’re collecting, if you wanna have a look. Oh, and we’re also measuring and weighing him, duh.”

She passes a digital tablet to her friend then, the list reading as follows:

Rocket's headquarters were, quite honestly, amazing. Nomi still couldn't believe she was in an actual submarine. As Ceri had toured her around the facilities, she'd stared at everything with the wide-eyed, unabashed awe of a child being taken to a brand new theme park. When they'd reached the laboratories, Nomi had let out an audible gasp. She'd thought the technology and equipment at Slateport University was impressive, but here...there's cutting edge robotics and machinery she hadn't even known existed.[break][break]
Did my parents work somewhere like this once?[break][break]
Now, Ceri was handing Nomi a digital tablet, which the pink-haired girl took eagerly. She scanned the samples, eyes settling on the final one: Infinity Energy Readings. She looked back up at her friend, expression intrigued. "This last one sounds fascinating!" She exclaimed excitedly, pointing to it. Surely they'd need more than a lethargic Stufful for all of these samples, though, right?[break][break]
Speaking of the Stufful, Nomi reached out instinctively and pet the Pokémon's head. She wasn't entirely sure what all of Rocket's experiments were about, but this little Pokémon looked well cared for, at least - which made sense, being Ceri's. Nomi tried not to think about what some of the more...involved procedures might entail, elsewhere in the building. She'd cross that bridge when she came to it. Scientific advancement was important, after all. Any lingering wariness Nomi might have felt about Rocket's motives prior to her visit to Sootopolis swiftly faded as her natural curiosity - the part of her that genuinely craved answers about how the world worked - began to fully take over.[break][break]
"Well, what's first? And how can I help, Ceri?"

”Cool, isn’t it?” Ceri beams at Nomi while getting everything they need ready. It’s nice to have someone with whom to discuss all of this. Someone who isn’t one of her bosses, that is. As much as she may adore Cillian Quinn, talking to him like she would talk to a friend would be weird. He’s more like… a father figure. Except her father really sucks, so that’s also not quite right. ”Infinity Energy is the bioenergy of all living things. Remember all those unusual things that happened a few months back? Strange pokémon being born, crystablooms appearing, and so on? All of those happened ‘cause of a surge of Infinity Energy!”

And it had been that surge of Infinity Energy that had attracted Necrozma to Sootopolis, leading to the recent attack. Of course, Ceri doesn’t mention that much.

Instead, she goes to wash her hands, putting on a new pair of nitrile gloves before opening the Pokérus test’s packaging.

”Can you put him on the scale? We’ll start off with measurements and the Pokérus test. Then while we wait for results for that one, we can take care of collecting the rest of the samples and what not!”

Nomi did remember some of the bizarre happenings Ceri was referring to. So Infinity Energy was behind all of that? It made sense, of course. Sunlight helped plants grow, but too much of it, and they would wither. Such was the delicate balance that held sway over much of the natural world. If Infinity Energy was a key component of all living things - Pokémon especially - then it would make sense that a surge in Infinity Energy would cause strange things to happen - unusual things. Dangerous things, even.[break][break]
It really was fascinating.[break][break]
Snapping out of her momentary reverie and re-focusing on the task at hand, Nomi followed suit, washing her own hands after Ceri was finished at the sink. She then donned a second pair of nitrile gloves and walked over to the Stufful. "I'm going to weigh you now, little guy," she said to the sleepy Pokémon before picking him up and carrying him over to a large scale on the ground. The Stufful merely yawned, making no protest.[break][break]
"14lbs!" She called over to Ceri. "Just a little smaller than average."

Ceri could spend hours upon hours talking about her research. She could tell Nomi all about her theories on how increased amounts Infinity Energy affects living organisms, especially pokémon during prenatal development. Like radiation. Like any contaminant or toxin. It’s her field of work.

She has spent countless hours studying it all, and it all starts here: with running tests and collecting samples to study.
[break][break]
”Awesome, gotta make sure to include that in the chart.” She smiles, stepping closer to Nomi and the Stufful, this time with a long cotton swab in hand. ”Now, here. Open wide.”
[break][break]
Once she manages to get the Stufful to open its mouth, she carefully gets the sample for a rapid antigen test, which is of course placed in the corresponding liquid solution before reaching for a second cotton swab. This time it’s a buccal smear from the Stufful’s inner cheek, which will surely prove valuable when comparing DNA samples. It’s clear that she has done this one too many times before.

”There ya go! Not so bad, is it?” The Stufful is offered a treat, for Ceri is well aware that the next part may not be as easy. ”Ever drawn blood, Nomi?”

Nomi did, in fact, know how to draw blood. She wasn't especially practiced at it, but she wasn't going to mess it up, either. She nodded at Ceri and grabbed the right sort of needle for the job. Then she coaxed the Stufful into allowing her to handle its back leg, and she proceeded to gently prod around with her fingers until she found the lateral saphenous vein. She stuck the needle in nice and quick - the Stufful only jerked a little - and drew a full sample. "Easy now," she said to the little Pokémon in a kindly tone. "All done!"[break][break]
She carefully placed the blood with the rest of the samples Ceri had already taken, and smiled at her friend. "Easy enough, in the end," she noted. "Though I can see how this could all get a bit repetitive...possibly even boring." She chuckled a little, but then her expression grew more serious. "I want to eventually get involved in the sorts of...important experiments my parents might have worked on in Kanto. I want to find out what happened to them, of course, but I also...want to finish their work, you know?" She paused, regarding the Stufful. "Anyway, I know that won't happen overnight." Her voice had taken on a determined quality, as if to suggest she would take a million more blood samples for various Pokemon if it meant she might gain such an opportunity eventually.[break][break]

Ceri laughs when Nomi calls the sample collection process “a bit repetitive...possibly even boring”, shaking her head. ”Sure, collecting samples can suck sometimes, especially some of them when you have allergies like mine, but that’s just the start, you know?... Analysing the samples? Comparing them? Using them for experimentation? Arceus, Nomi, if I could tell you about some of the things I’ve been doing…”

She goes on about it as she works, clearly as excited about it as she is proud. This is where Ceri thrives, the study of toxins and their effects is just the start. After all, there’s a reason why her grad studies have been focused on biotechnology – she craves progress, advancement, and discovery.

”You’ll get there, Nomi! It will take work, sure, but I know you can do it. Plus… Bet your parents still collected samples even when they were working on their experiments, no? I sure do so myself. So, like, think of this as the first step.”

Ceri beams at her, her attention only then turning back to the tablet.

”Looks like we’re done with this guy for today.”

Ceri was right, of course. Nomi appreciated her friend's candor. She also couldn't help but smile fondly as Ceri rambled on about her projects and interests. The other young woman's passion for toxicology and advanced biotech was one of the reasons Nomi had felt drawn to Ceri when they'd first met at school. She wasn't just highly intelligent, with interests that aligned with Nomi's - she was ambitious, and she cared about discovery as much as Nomi did.[break][break]
If the two of them could make some kind of breakthrough...discover something that could change Hoenn forever...the possibilities were truly endless. A thrill surged through Nomi at the thought.[break][break]
"Thanks for the pep talk," Nomi laughed softly, tone sincere. "Everyone starts somewhere. Sample collection is just a piece of the larger scientific puzzle. I appreciate you taking me through my first collection." She paused, considering. "Working for Rocket isn't exactly like what we do in school, is it. There's just so much more we can do here. It's freeing, but also a little overwhelming." She sighed somewhat wistfully. "I want to study so many things, Ceri. I want to know what happened to my parents, but I also want to do things they could only have dreamed of...like go to space, or maybe even visit a different dimension..." she trailed off. That last desire was probably impossible, but she could dream.[break][break]
She helped Ceri clean up around the Stufful, growing quiet as she lost herself to her thoughts. After a few moments, she looked at her friend and asked, "Well? Anything else for today?"

This is their life. Some would perhaps wonder if Ceri regrets having told Naomi Sato the truth about her affiliations, if she thinks she runs her friend’s life by inviting her to join Team Rocket, but that much couldn’t be further from the truth.

It’s an opportunity.
[break][break]
Beyond all of Nomi’s wishes to learn more about her parents, beyond all of her hopes for the future, she’s right about one thing: Team Rocket’s laboratories are a place where they can study things they could never study anywhere else. Ceri has come to realise as much overtime; after spending so long dealing with Slateport University’s bureaucracy and especially after she began working with AEOS.

”Ha! Space and other dimensions have never really been my thing, but I’ve never had a passion for physics. Bring me back some weird pokémon or things that affect them and then we’re talking.” She winks at her friend, a bright smile illuminating her expression. ”Jokes aside, though… You can do all that and more!”

With that said, Ceri’s attention returns to their subject, looking over the list of collected samples in her tablet before nodding.

”Nope! Looks like we’re good to go! I’ll show you where we store the samples and then finish up his chart to send it to the MAGMA records. Good work today!”

Nomi couldn't help but wonder what the "more" might entail. She was so young, she had her entire life ahead of her. As she gazed at her friend, she realized that Ceri was one of the most resilient people she knew - always so upbeat, optimistic, and wearing her determination like a colorful garland, welcoming and festive. Ceri's life had not always been easy, Nomi knew. Did her friend ever doubt her path? Nomi hadn't ever doubted her own, had she?[break][break]
What else would I be doing? A small voice in the back of her mind inquired. It was a voice Nomi had heard before, but usually ignored. When her parents had disappeared, they'd - unknowingly - determined their daughter's destiny by pushing her in the direction of the very science that had likely killed them. Nomi had never questioned following in their footsteps. The path to answers about what happened to them lay in the scientific realm, but Nomi's mind had always been preoccupied with questions about the way the world worked. Pokémon had always fascinated her, but so had the chemistry of brewing beer, as inconsequential as that ultimately was.[break][break]
In the end, Nomi liked to mix things together and then see what resulted.[break][break]
Together, she and Ceri were a combination that would likely accomplish great things. It pleased Nomi to have found a friend like Ceri; they were aligned intellectually and ambitiously...and, Nomi realized, she liked being around Ceri's passion. It bolstered her own.[break][break]
Nomi felt suddenly compelled to hug the other girl, but she held back, blushing a little at the rush of sentimentality. Silly to be getting so emotional in the middle of lab work! Nomi collected herself, and helped Ceri put away the equipment from the sample collection. As Nomi was packing up her own personal belongings, her stomach growled rather loudly - had they worked through lunch?[break][break]
"Want to grab something to eat?" She asked Ceri, grinning a little. "Since you've been so awesome about onboarding me, it will be my treat!"
